BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Yesterday afternoon, I had the opportunity to speak to students and staff at Melbourne High School on Human Trafficking and what we as a community can do to prevent it.

The event, Melbourne High School “Power Hour” Luncheon was hosted by Zonta of Brevard and was extremely well attended by students, staff and family members.

Florida ranks third in the nation in the most incidence of Human Trafficking with Orlando ranking third in the nation as well for Human Trafficking activities.

This horrific crime exploits and enslaves men, women and children into what amounts to modern day slavery. By working together, we can help stop Human Trafficking through education, awareness and the always constant Crime Prevention tool, “if you see something, say something!!”

During the presentation I was honored to be joined by other guest speakers, Rainey Cannavino, the Vice President of Bikers Against Trafficking who shared her story of being a survivor of this type of crime and members of Zonta who shared their mission and local impact against Human Trafficking right here in our community.

Rainey’s honest and brave personal story made a huge impact on everyone in attendance and really helped to demonstrate the need for community involvement if we ever hope to eradicate Human Trafficking in our country.

I would like to personally thank everyone who attended the presentation, School Board Member Kayte Campbell, and Melbourne High School for hosting this very interesting and timely presentation. By bringing education and awareness to our youth, we help lower the number of victims in our community and eradicate Human Trafficking in our future!
