Recovery Center Adapts to Meet Growing Opioid Crisis
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – As politicians spend time talking about strategies to combat the growing opioid epidemic, a long-time local provider is taking action.
Community Treatment Center, located on the outskirts of the Diamond Square community in Cocoa, is changing its name, honing its focus, and starting a capital campaign to upgrade its facilities to face the growing needs.
Enter newly-named Space Coast Recovery – the only accredited and licensed residential drug addiction treatment program in Brevard County.
SCR is planning to raise funds to build a new dormitory building with room, laundry, and shower amenities.
“It was time for a fresh coat of paint,” says Barbie Thrower, Executive Director of Space Coast Recovery.
“We are living in a time in which there is a higher demand for drug addiction treatment than ever before. We knew we needed to market ourselves in such a way that would allow our community to know we are here and we are ready to serve.”
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, more than 130 people die every day after overdosing on opioids. This is an increase of over 30 percent since 2016.
Space Coast Recovery is licensed by the State of Florida Department of Children and Family Services and accredited by CARF.
SCR offers Level III Residential Treatment for males in Cocoa, Florida and Level I (DUI) Outpatient Treatment for males and females in Titusville, Cocoa and Melbourne, Florida.
Residential treatment consists of 30, 60, and 90 days, as well as, 6-12 months. Additionally, SCR offers follow-up aftercare services and on-site community support meetings.
“We serve the uninsured, unemployed, homeless, and indigent. Our treatment offers total abstinence from drugs and alcohol,” said Thrower.
“We are open 24/7 and 365. This is a matter of life and death every day.”
