BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Our agency facilitated a Public Safety round table discussion at the request of Florida Governor Ron Desantis to discuss School Safety and other innovative measures we are using to make sure that our schools are safe at every level.

The round table discussion was attended by members of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Command Team, School Security Team, Governor DeSantis, the First Lady of Florida, Casey DeSantis and Andrew Pollack, an incredible advocate and grieving father who lost his daughter Meadow in the senseless murders at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

The Sheriff’s Office was asked to host the round table discussion and subsequent News Conference concerning the issuance of a Governor’s Executive Order because of our strong stance on making certain our schools are “hard targets” and because of our commitment to the Guardian Program that was included as part of the Governor’s Executive Order.

The Executive Order issued by DeSantis directs DOE to direct all county school districts to expeditiously provide the information requested.

As part of the round table discussion, we discussed and presented some of the model programs that have been implemented in Brevard to protect our children, teachers, staff and volunteers as well as the design of our Guardian Program and the impact it is having on protecting our schools.

It was truly an honor to be part of today’s discussion and important announcement about several measures concerning School Security, as well as to share our outstanding accomplishments in the protection of our most precious of citizens, our children!

There is no doubt that Governor DeSantis is a leader who is not only passionate in his support of public safety, but also in our shared belief that government’s number one priority is to ensure the safety of our citizens!

I would like to personally thank the Governor and his staff for meeting with us today and for recognizing our effective efforts that can be shared as best practices throughout the state of Florida.

I would also like to thank the wonderful members of our School Security Team, our School Superintendent Mark Mullins and our School Board Members who work tirelessly around the clock to provide safety and security for our students.

Lastly, I would like to extend our thoughts and prayers to Andy Pollack, the parents and families who lost their children a year ago during the tragic incident that took place at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
