BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – A man in Melbourne has been hospitalized and will be taken to a mental health treatment facility after he jumped from the Eau Gallie Causeway into the Indian River on Thursday, police say.

Police say they received numerous calls from citizens describing an adult male climbing over the railing of the Eau Gallie Causeway and jumping from the peak.

Melbourne police officers and a marine unit immediately dispatched around 12:32 p.m.

The marine unit was able to make contact with the man and retrieved him from the water.

Police say the man was alert and was able to help himself into the boat, while complaining of pain.

He was then transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

“Further investigation revealed the male jumped in an attempt to commit suicide,” said a spokesperson with the Melbourne Police Department.

“He will continue to receive medical treatment until he adequately recovers and then will be turned over to a mental health treatment facility for further evaluation under a Baker Act.”
