UCF Engineering and Computer Science Students Showcase Their Game-Changing Projects on Friday

130 innovations will be on display at UCF’s 2019 Senior Design Showcase on Friday

ORLANDO, FLORIDA – A group of 14 graduating UCF engineering and computer science seniors spent more than a year designing and building a fishing boat that creates only minimal noise.

The vessel is equipped with advanced technologies—electric propulsion and computational fluid dynamics—to be “ultra-quiet,” helping fishermen improve their daily haul.

The students’ project is one of more than 130 innovations that will be on display at UCF’s 2019 Senior Design Showcase on Friday.

Many of the student projects seek to resolve real-world issues facing communities and businesses. They include a caregiver app, which allows individuals to monitor a loved one’s vital signs from afar, as well as a newly modeled all-wheel-drive electric motorcycle.

Several of the student projects have been produced under corporate sponsorship with the potential for future commercial development.

Duke Energy is backing the development of an autonomous solar-powered beach buggy capable of transporting more than 120 pounds of cargo.

The Florida Space Institute is sponsoring the creation of an excavator robot used for mining a planet’s surfaces. Other notable sponsors include Coca Cola, Lockheed Martin, NASA and Siemens.

The projects are part of the capstone class for seniors in UCF’s College of Engineering and Computer Science, who receive grades for their inventions and display their work at the showcase as the final step before graduating.

At the conclusion of the showcase, a panel of faculty, staff, alumni and engineering professionals will select the top project from each discipline as well as the best-in show. In the coming months, a number of the student projects will compete in national engineering competitions.
