BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – It’s always said that history repeats itself, and so it will prove true on Friday, May 10 when the Florida Prep Class of 2019 takes to the stage of The Henegar Center for the Arts, in Melbourne Florida, becoming the first high school class since 1955 to graduate from this building.

A mainstay of the downtown Melbourne area, The Henegar Center was built as a school in 1919 and graduated its first class of only 13 students in 1921.

The building continued to be used as a High School until 1955 before students were relocated to the current high school on nearby Babcock Street.

An elementary school remained on site until June 11, 1975, when after 46 years as a school, the location closed.

A succession of uses, abandonment, calls for demolition and the resurrection of the building as The Henegar Center for the Arts followed, transforming the once dilapidated building into the magnificent local theatre that now sits as a centerpiece to the vibrant downtown community.

With such a rich history and having recently celebrated the building’s 100 years anniversary, it is now more than fitting that the Florida Prep Class of 2019 should choose to celebrate its graduation in a location not only supported by the school (Florida Prep recently inked a 5-year $125,000 sponsorship package with the theatre), but one of huge significance to the local community.

It’s unlikely the Florida Prep graduates taking to the stage will be looking back, they are ready and excited to begin their own transformational journeys, but later as they return to their families and 10 individual countries they can reflect, “Yes, indeed, I did make history.”
