(NASA) – Space Shuttle Endeavour lifted off for the first time from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center on May 7, 1992.

The primary objective was the capture and redeployment of the INTELSAT VI (F-3) which was stranded in an unusable orbit since its launch aboard the Titan rocket in March 1990.

Nearly nine days later, the crew (Commander: Dan Brandenstine, Pilot: Kevin Chilton, and Mission Specialists: Pierre Thuot, Kathy Thornton, Rick Hieb, Tom Akers, and Bruce Melnick) returned after a daring and successful rescue mission.

Space Shuttle Endeavour (Orbiter Vehicle 105) went on to fly a total of 25 missions in space, retiring after STS-134 in 2011.

The orbiter is now on display at the California Science Center in Los Angeles.
