PALM BEACH GARDENS, FLORIDA – The Florida Tech women’s golf team will compete in the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championships beginning Tuesday at PGA National Resort & Spa.
Tech is one of 16 teams vying for the title at the Champion Course at PGA National, the home of the Honda Classic and the legendary “Bear Trap”, taking place from May 14-18.
In addition to the field of 16 teams, there are another 16 individuals from 15 different schools who will be competing in the tournament.
This marks the first time in program history that the Panthers will play in the national championship as a team. In the past, only individual players performed well enough at the regional to earn a spot.
The first round of the national championship is set to begin Tuesday at 8 a.m.
The Panthers are ranked No. 5 in the country in both the Golfstat and WGCA rankings.
Florida Tech is one of the top teams in the nation in par-4 and par-5 scoring this season, boasting the sixth-best rating on par-5s at 5.05 and are 13th on par-4 holes at 4.31. Tech is also second in the nation with 341 total birdies.
The format for national championships has changed this season. Instead of four rounds of stroke play for the championship, the teams will play three rounds, then the top eight teams will advance to match-play where they will need to win three rounds for the title.
