BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – This week I joined several members of our agency, representing our nearly 1,500 members as we escorted the family of Agent Kevin Stanton to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington DC.

The Memorial Wall located at Judiciary Square honors the sacrifices of over 21,000 officers who were taken from us in the line of duty.

The Memorial features a reflecting pool on a 3-acre park, which is surrounded by beautiful walkways where the walls are inscribed with the names of all US law enforcement officers – federal, state and local – who have died in the line of duty.

This week, May 13 through May 19, is the annual Law Enforcement Memorial Week, created in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy to pay tribute to the thousands of Law Enforcement sacrifices. It is a time to pay tribute to so many mothers, fathers, husbands, wives, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, and friends… all heroes, who gave all they had, and all they will ever have to protect their communities!

Men and women, no matter what color uniform or shape of badge who bravely stood with one common purpose, the protection of our citizens.

The week will not only recognize each as the new names of the fallen are unveiled, but most importantly, where the survivors of each are supported with love and appreciation for their sacrifices!

This week we sadly, yet proudly stood with Agent Stanton’s family as tens of thousands in attendance for the week honored his sacrifice as he joined 370 other heroes formerly dedicated to the Memorial Monument Wall during the 31st annual candlelight vigil.

The Monument will now embrace the names of 21,910 fallen officers.

The oldest historical death etched on the Memorial Wall is that of Sheriff Benjamin Branch of Chesterfield County, Virginia, whose End Of Watch (EOW) was April 29, 1786.

It is truly a solemn event, with friends and families, strangers and comrades, all sharing grief and pride, fond stories and memories as they bond as a single family.

Without question there are many tears and smiles that are shared as the good times are remembered and the lives of these brave heroes are celebrated!!

I ask that you please join us in a moment of thought and prayer for the 21,910 who made the ultimate sacrifice so that we may live safer and also for their survivors who live on in memory of their heroes!
