BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA – The new boat ramp construction is almost completed at Kiwanis Island on Merritt Island and Brevard County Commissioner and Vice Chair Bryan Lober recently inspected the improvements which are on schedule, and within budget, thanks to the Brevard County Parks and Recreation Department, BRPH and W&J Construction.

The new boat dock will open in late June.

Kiwanis Island Park is an 18.5-acre island surrounded by water, featuring the boat ramp and a natural launch area that provides access for boaters, rowers and paddlers into Sykes Creek leading to the Barge Canal or Banana River.

“The total project cost was $196,388, of which it is estimated that FEMA will pay $147,291,” said Commissioner Lober.

“The State of Florida is anticipated to pay roughly $24,549 and Brevard County is estimated to contribute approximately $24,948, or 12.5 percent of the overall cost.”

Commissioner Lober said that, while obtaining federal and state reimbursement for such projects may slow them down considerably, the end result is that 87.5 percent of the project cost comes from the federal and state government, saving Brevard County taxpayers the burden of increased taxes.
