BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – Around 40 student volunteers and 12 coaches from Cocoa High School’s athletic programs are giving back to the community over the holiday week as they’re planting 2,700 American flags in surrounding areas.

Many of the flags, which Cocoa High School athletic director Mark Carstens said measured 12 inches by 8 inches and also had two-foot stems were planted on Wednesday by the volunteers, with the remainder set to go into grounds on Thursday morning.

“We wanted to give back to the community and represent our school and celebrate the 4th of July by thanking our community,” Carstens said.

The event, Carstens, received significant support from the American Legion in Cape Canaveral that donated money for the flags to be purchased.

Carstens, who just completed his first year at CHS, brought the idea over from his time working at Satellite High School.

“It’s all about teaching our kids the importance of giving back,” Carstens said.

“We have such a strong following here at Cocoa for all our sports. It’s great to see the kids door-to-door, house-to-house and see people sitting outside and shake their hands and say thank you.”

Student-athletes at the school seemed to also enjoy the idea.

“I thought it was real cool,” added D.J. Arroyo, a rising junior, who plays quarterback on the school’s football team.

“Back where I was from they did this all the time so I thought it was cool. Came up here and did it,” Arroyo said.

“It was a great morning. Having fun with all my teammates, handing out flags, helping the community,” added senior Marquise Freeman on what he experienced on Wednesday morning.
