This summer, the King Center is undergoing renovations on its heating, ventilation and air conditioning system.

The system is now more than 30 years old and is beginning to fail. Air handlers have stopped functioning for periods of time, gauges have been broken, pumps have been damaged by rust, and pipes have been leaking.

If a catastrophic failure of the system were to occur, the facility could be shut down for an extended period of time, due to flooding or major equipment damage.

In order to protect against this, the King Center has developed a $1.7 million renovation project, which will replace the portion of the HVAC system that serves the main stage and the auditorium – the two most important areas of the facility.

The building, which opened to the public in 1988, will also receive a $1.9 million architectural and interior design upgrade. The time presents itself for the King Center to reflect the modern spirit and artistry of the exceptional performances that grace its stage.

The design renovation will enrich the facility both functionally and aesthetically, as well as increase revenue opportunities and enhance the overall guest experience.

The King Center for the Performing Arts is undergoing major renovations this summer to modernize key areas of the building and replace its aged air conditioning and heating system. The King Center will have limited performances on its main stage from June through October while the work occurs. The box office and administrative offices will remain open as its staff continues booking future shows.

What’s happening, exactly?

  • Replacement of the portion of the air conditioning system that serves the King Center’s main stage
  • Bold, dramatic architectural updates to the front entrance of the building
  • Exterior paint (entire building)
  • The addition of enclosed vestibules at the front entrance, to streamline security procedures and create more space inside the main lobby
  • Modifications to the main lobby, including a bar addition and a refresh of the donor and founders walls
  • Remodel of the VIP club, including contemporary furnishings and acoustic accommodations

When?

June through October 2019

Will there be performances during the renovations?

We will have limited performances on the main stage during the renovation period. Our Classic Albums Live summer concert series will go on as planned. The box office and administrative offices will remain open throughout the summer. We’ll be busy booking shows for our 32nd season!
