BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Palm Bay police officers responded to assist Palm Bay Fire Rescue working a house fire on Tuesday as firefighters quickly entered the house, rescued the sole occupant – and also four of the five dogs.

The officers on the scene then provided life-saving measures on the dogs until additional Fire Rescue personnel arrived.

Pet Masks donated by Invisible Fence earlier this year were used to treat the dogs suffering from smoke inhalation.

Palm Bay Fire Rescue C Shift units responded to Altamira Street in the northwest section of the city for a confirmed attic fire.

Upon arrival, crews faced a working fire with the house fully charged with smoke and a male victim was pulled from the fire with smoke inhalation.

Crews were also able to rescue several dogs from the residence and Palm Bay police officers assisted with giving the pets oxygen and water.

“Fantastic job by the company on Engine 3 and the other units that responded from Palm Bay Fire Rescue and Brevard County Fire Rescue,” said PBFR officials.

Each year, it’s estimated more than 40,000 pets die in fires, mainly due to smoke inhalation.

The reality is, in most cases, first responders lack the equipment to resuscitate and save these animals.

“Programs like ‘Project Breathe’ are addressing the issue, by providing us this generous donation our agency will be better equipped to help and treat your furry family members if the need ever arises,” said Brevard County Fire Rescue Chief Mark Schollmeyer.
