BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Read the history of Florida Prep and it quickly becomes clear that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Kennedy Space Center are featured prominently.

In fact, the school was opened in 1961 to accommodate the children of the many scientists and contractors flooding into Brevard County for the lunar landing program.

In its first three years from 1961 to 1964, the program grew over 500 percent and involved some 34,000 NASA personnel and 375,000 employees of associated industrial and university contractors.

School space was limited and Florida Air Academy, as Florida Prep was known at the time, soon grew into a desirable choice for students from around the world.

Florida Prep’s location, only 30 minutes’ drive from Kennedy Space Center, has allowed us to continue this association.

“Over the years we have been privileged to view up close the progress in Space exploration, and its associated technologies,” said Florida Prep Principal Lisa Gray.

“Indeed, many of our families, both past and present, continue to be intransigently linked to the space program and space exploration.

“We were delighted to continue that exploration spirit with our Space Science Week during our Summer Program from July 22 – July 26. Space Science Week was part of the Florida Prep four-week summer program.”
