Struck From Behind By Car

BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA – The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the death of a cyclist this morning near one of the gates to the Kennedy Space Center.

Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Wanda Diaz said Colin P. Bateman of Cocoa, 44, was riding a bicycle on State Road 3 on Merritt Island about 8:40 a.m. when he was struck from behind by a 2004 Honda CRV driven by Yvonne Price of Orlando, 46.

Price told investigators she had just passed another automobile on the left and had re-entered the right lane and wasn’t aware how rapidly she was gaining on the cyclist.

The accident happened about half a mile south of the Gate 3 entrance to Kennedy Space Center.

Bateman was declared dead at the scene of the accident.

FHP troopers are continuing their investigation and charges are pending.

  1. I cannot believe what I’m reading here. Tears for all who were touched by his wonderful sense of humor. To think I didn’t even know Colin was also so smart as I graduated with him in 1985. Thank Goodness for Facebook or I’d have never been able to reconnect with Colin. He will be so very sorely missed.
