BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND – Firefighters extinguished a brush fire near the intersection of North Tropical Trail and Pioneer Road on Merritt Island on Thursday afternoon.

Lt. Jeff Taylor of Brevard County Fire Rescue said crews were dispatched after receiving a call about the fire at 2:54 p.m. Thursday.

“Firefighters arrived on scene minutes later and reported a fast-moving fire located on an empty lot surrounded by homes,” Taylor said.

Taylor said firefighters quickly deployed brush trucks and handlines into the area and were able to knock the fire down before any homes were threatened.

Officials estimate the fire burned about two acres.

Taylor said that crews deemed the fire under control at 3:27 p.m. and began mopping up hot spots in the area.

The cause of the fire is undetermined.

Brevard County units at the scene included Truck 41, Engine 42, Engine 43, Brush 41, Fire 8, District 40, public information officer and District 45.
