Deadly Rip Current Too Strong

BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA BEACH, FLORIDA – A man visiting Brevard County from Arizona died Sunday following an incident in which a rip current pulled him out on to the ocean.

Cocoa Beach police say William J. Clifford of Tempe, Ariz., 66, was swimming Sunday with a friend near the Ocean Landings Resort in Cocoa Beach.when he was swept out to sea by a strong rip current.

Clifford was eventually located and brought back to shore by Beach Rangers and police.

He was given CPR and transported to Cape Canaveral Hospital where he subsequently died.

Lifeguards throughout the Space Coast say they responded to more than 100 hundred calls for assistance this past weekend as a result of strong waves and rip currents.
