Lt. Jeff Taylor of Brevard County Fire Rescue said the accident happened at about 5:40 p.m. in the 1900 block of Hammock Road in Mims near Parrish Road.

Sgt. Kim Montes of the Florida Highway Patrol said an investigation revealed that three teen boys and a passenger were riding the ATVs when the first driver slowed suddenly.

The driver of the second ATV was carrying a passenger and was unable to stop, striking the back of the third ATV. That vehicle then ejected the passenger, crashed into the second ATV and the passenger was run over by the third ATV.

When Brevard County Fire Rescue crews arrived, a trauma alert was issued for three of the ATV riders.

Taylor said Air Care helicopters 1, 2 and 3 were dispatched to the scene and transported the patients to the Pediatric Trauma Center at Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital.

“A landing zone was established at nearby Chain of Lakes Park,” Taylor said.

Montes said all three ATV drivers were issued a ticket for illegally driving on a public road and that the drivers of the second and third ATVs were given tickets for careless driving. The driver of the third ATV also was issued a ticket for not wearing a helmet.
