BREVARD COUNTY • INDIALANTIC, FLORIDA A late afternoon crash Wednesday on State Road A1A in Indialantic killed a driver and left 1,400 FPL customers without electrical service for hours.

Sgt. Kim Montes of the Florida Highway Patrol said about 4:40 p.m. Wednesday James Thomas of Satellite Beach, 52, was northbound on State Road A1A in a 2011 GMC pickup when he suddenly left the road, hit a culvert and then struck the guidelines to a power pole near Coral Way.

The pickup truck then traveled into the surrounding woods as the power pole toppled over.

Thomas was extracted from the vehicle and taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Montes said the cause of the crash remains under investigation and troopers will wait for results of an autopsy to learn if Thomas suffered a medical condition that may have led to the accident.

FPL restored power to the affected homes by 7 p.m.
