The vigil is held in memory of the 28,000 United States citizens who die from accidental drug deaths each year.

It is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at the Viera Government Complex.

Local community leaders will join together to light candles, bow their heads in a moment of silence and view stories of young people who have died, many from abusing and misusing prescription medications.

The Brevard County vigil is organized by the Narcotic Overdose Prevention and Education (NOPE) Task Force and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.  Both organizations are committed to educating our children and adults about the growing destructive forces of drug abuse that have hurt countless communities.

N.O.P.E, or the Narcotic Overdose Prevention and Education Task Force is a non-profit organization formed in Palm Beach County in 2004.  Its purpose is to combat the illegal use of prescription drugs and narcotics, as well as many other abused substances.

The Task Force is comprised of community leaders and concerned families working to save lives.  Its only mission is to diminish the frequency of overdose deaths through community education, family support and purposeful advocacy.
