Grant Helps Create New Program For Brevard Schools

Will Serve Hundreds Daily

BREVARD COUNTY • VIERA, FLORIDA – Brevard Public Schools has announced that its Office of Adult and Community Education  has received a fifth 21st Century Community Learning Center grant called “Explorers University.”

This five-year grant has a funding total of $3,080,000 and will serve approximately 280 students per day.

The award will provide after-school services through School Age Child Care to four elementary schools in the south area including Discovery, Harbor City, Jupiter and Sunrise.

The monies will provide academic support in reading, science, math, and technology while offering experiential opportunities through the Brevard Zoo, the Brevard Cultural Alliance, and Melbourne Police Athletic League.

Existing 21st CCLC grants include “Zoo Explorers” in the Cocoa/Rockledge area; “Space Explorers” in Titusville; “Zoo Explorers South” in Melbourne; and “Art Explorers” in the Melbourne/Palm Bay area.

The Zoo Explorers program at Cambridge, Endeavour, Golfview and Saturn Elementary Schools is in the fourth year of a five-year grant with a funding total of $3,027,024.

Business partners for the Zoo Explorers grant are the Brevard Zoo, Brevard Cultural Alliance, and the Cocoa Police Athletic League.

The Space Explorers program held at Coquina and South Lake Elementary Schools is in the final year of a five-year grant with a funding total of $1,846,266.

Business partners for the Space Explorers grant are DNC Parks and Resorts at KSC, Inc. (which includes Astronaut Hall of Fame, Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge, and Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex), YMCA of Central Florida, and Brevard Cultural Alliance.

Palm Bay, Port Malabar, Roy Allen, Riviera and University Park Elementary Schools are hosts for the Art Explorers which is in its third year of a five year grant with a funding total of $3,080,000. Business partners for the Art Explorers are the Brevard Cultural Alliance, Brevard Zoo, and the Melbourne Police Athletic League.

The Zoo Explorers South program is in its second year of a five-year grant with a funding total of $3,080,000.

Business partners for the Zoo Explorers South are the Brevard Zoo, Melbourne Police Athletic League, and Brevard Cultural Alliance. Host elementary schools for this grant are Croton, Dr. W.J. Creel, Sabal and Sherwood.

The four grants serve more than 1,000 students daily, and have received exemplary evaluations from the Florida Department of Education, Bureau of Family and Community Outreach and the University of Florida 21st CCLC Leadership Team.

All five 21st CCLC grants will be managed by Jackie Francisco, assistant district coordinator, School Age Child Care.
