Ben Buchanan, a Council member for 13 years, will assume the role of Chairman.  Buchanan is a Vice President at Merrill Lynch Wealth Management, with the Gear Buchanan Group in Melbourne.

Bill Zoby, who has served on the Council for 7 years, is the new Vice Chairman.  Zoby, a Melbourne resident, is a marketing and sales consultant for consumer products.

Take Stock in Children provides a unique opportunity for low-income, at-risk students in Brevard County to escape the cycle of poverty through education.  The program offers students college scholarships, mentors and hope for a successful future.  Volunteer mentors meet with their student each week at school throughout the school year.

Buchanan expressed his desire to promote a greater understanding among businesses and community leaders regarding both the positive impact provided by the Take Stock in Children program and the need for expansion.

“It truly changes the lives of the participating students and their families.   The opportunities provided to these at-risk teens result in productive, participating citizens who contribute to the community.”

He said that the immediate need is for funding to purchase additional scholarships.

More than 300 students applied for acceptance into the Take Stock in Children program for the 2011-12 school year, but based on available funding, only 45 were accepted.

Take Stock in Children is the signature program of The Brevard Schools Foundation, a direct support 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
