BCC Falls In Women’s Home Basketball Opener

Titans Now 1-2 Overall For Season

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The Brevard Community College women’s basketball team rallied from an early 14-point deficit, but couldn’t close the deal, falling 88-83 to visiting Santa Fe Community College on Tuesday in the Melbourne Campus gym.

BCC, which fell to 1-2 with the loss in its home opener, came within two points, 28-26, with 8 minutes and 36 seconds to play in the first half after trailing 20-6 at the 14:48 mark. Santa Fe pulled away but BCC came to within three, 37-34 with 3:25 remaining in the first half.

Santa Fe led at the break 47-38.

After the break BCC stayed close coming within three at 48-45 at the 16:40 mark. Santa Fe made another run, going back up by 11, 64-53. But BCC staged its biggest comeback of the game, rallying to within one point, 71-70 on a Shaneece Stephens layup with 5:37 to go.

That would be as close as BCC would come.

“We’ve got to pull into defensive mode,” BCC head coach Renee Bellamy said. “One of the biggest things is everyone has to clamp down. We had some miscommunication on defense. That’s one of the biggest things.”

Sophomore co-captain Stephens finished the night with 20 points while sophomore teammate Shante Stevenson added 18.

Sophomore guard Tiara Thompson led Santa Fe with 33 points while classmate Kaitlynn Pacholke added 15. Santa Fe improved to 3-0.

Both teams struggled from the free-throw line, BCC hitting 18 of 30 and Santa Fe 15 of 28.

“We practice those (free throws) a lot in practice,” Bellamy said. “We’ve got to play them (Santa Fe) again two more times.”

The coach praised the play of Stephens.

“She’s a good player,” Bellamy said. “She’s a competitor. She hates to lose. She tries to carry the team on her back. Sometimes she does it a little bit too much. We’ve just got to get her a balance. That’s the main thing.”

Next up for BCC is the College of Central Florida Tournament Nov. 16 and17 against Santa Fe and the College of Central Florida.
