February is Heart Awareness Month

Learn How to Beat the Number 1 Cause of Death in the United States

BREVARD COUNTY • ROCKLEDGE, FLORIDA — February is Heart Awareness Month, and Health First is kicking off its month long initiative to increase Brevard County’s odds against heart disease.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States; one in every three deaths is from heart disease.

“STEMI System: The Chain of Survival at the Time of Heart Attack” will be presented by Cesar Jara, MD, Board-certified Cardiologist with Health First Medical Group on Feb. 20. (Space Coast Medicine & Active Living magazine)

But, we have the knowledge and the power to fight it. Simple changes to diet and exercise, and awareness are all it takes to drastically increase your chances of survival.

During the entire month of February, Health First urges all members of our community to learn about heart disease, and take the simple steps required to increase their heart health.

Eight free public lectures on critical, life-saving topics will be presented on several dates, including February 6, 13, 20 and 27. Health First Holmes Regional Medical Center will alos hold a free blood pressure screening on each lecture day from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m.

All lectures will be at Health First Holmes Regional Medical Center, 1350 South Hickory Street, Melbourne in Auditorium A. (Parking will be in Zone A).

Wednesday, February 6

11:00 a.m. – 12 Noon: “Healthy Eating for a Healthy Heart.” Presented by registered dietitians Aimee Molineaux RD/LDN, Candice Eisenmann RD/LDN and Tristan Soyka RD/LDN

12 Noon to 1:00 p.m.: “Healthy Cooking Demo” Presented by Executive Chef Mark Whitley – samples provided.

Wednesday, February 13

11:00 a.m. – 12 Noon: “Life-Saving Medications After Heart Attack and Stroke – The Anti-Platelet Drugs” Presented by Health First pharmacist Stephen Gilbert, PharmD, BCPS.

12 Noon to 1:00 p.m: “Deep Vein Thrombosis” Presented by Robert Kennedy, MD, Board-certified Interventional Radiologist with Health First Medical Group.

Wednesday, February 20

11:00 a.m. – 12 Noon: “Using Nuclear Medicine to Diagnose Heart and Other Disease.” Presented by Ronald Levy, MD, independent board-certified nuclear medicine physician.

12 Noon to 1:00 p.m.: “STEMI System: The Chain of Survival at the Time of Heart Attack.” Presented by Cesar Jara, MD, Board-certified Cardiologist with Health First Medical Group.

Wednesday, February 27

11:00 a.m. – 12 Noon: “The Basic Facts About Open Heart Surgery.” Presented by Gregory Simmons, MD, Board-certified Cardiothoracic surgeon with Health First Medical Group.

12 Noon to 1:00 p.m.: “Aortic Valve Replacement.” Presented by Matthew Campbell, MD, Board-certified Cardiothoracic surgeon with Health First Medical Group.
