BREVARD COUNTY • PORT CANAVERAL, FLORIDA – Port Canaveral Authority Commissioner Tom Weinberg and CEO Stan Payne join members of the Port Canaveral Association as they present the Space Coast Cancer Foundation $28,000 check for proceeds raised from the Vonda Welborn Pink Ribbon Port Fest held last October.

The funds raised will stay in Brevard County to aid patients undergoing treatment, educating the public and for cancer research. In the past three years, the event has raised over $95,00 for the cause and hopes to add a considerable amount to that total this year.

Space Coast Cancer Foundation was established in May 2006 with a mission to assist cancer patients and their caregivers in the local community with the financial and emotional demands that are associated with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

The foundation provides patient transportation, direct financial assistance to help pay for pain medication, anti-nausea medication, and other support needs (wigs, scarves, hats) of cancer patients. The Space Coast Cancer Foundation collaborates with Walgreen’s Pharmacy for prescriptions that are filled locally and assist patients without insurance by contacting pharmaceutical companies for free chemotherapy for those patients that are eligible and qualify.

In addition to assisting cancer patients and their caregivers, the board of directors supports local oncology education and research. The foundation has available 10 $200 educational scholarships for the oncology nurses at each area hospital. This enables oncology nurses employed at the hospitals to receive financial reimbursement for the expense of going to courses to maintain their oncology and chemotherapy certification.

The Board of Directors of the Space Coast Cancer Foundation includes Richard M. Levine, MD – Chairman, Tina Norman – President, Linda Bradley – Immediate Past President, Nancy Payne – Treasurer, Shannon Simmons – Secretary, Harry Jones, Esq., Melissa Flammio Clark, Eddie Norman, Grace Vista, Linda Miedema, PhD, Vonda Welborn, Dawn Faust and Susan Swanson.
