BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – Palm Bay patrol officers are trying to determine what led to a fatal traffic crash near Palm Bay Road and Babcock Street on Wednesday morning.

Palm Bay Public Information Officer Yvonne Martinez said westbound lanes of Palm Bay Road were closed between Babcock Street and East Riviera Drive while officers conducted their investigation, but that the road has since been re-opened.

Martinez said the driver of a Ford F250 pickup was traveling west on Palm Bay Road and struck two vehicles in the area of  Lakewood Drive causing injury to one of the other drivers.

She said the driver of the truck continued west and as he drove through the intersection of Babcock Street and Palm Bay Road, he struck the rear of a white Ford Intrepid.

The force of the collision caused this driver of the Intrepid to lose control, turn sideways in front of a CVS pharmacy and hit the stop sign between CVS and a Staples store, coming to rest in the culvert in front of Staples. The driver of the Intrepid was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver  of the F250truck continued west on Palm Bay Road, jumped the median facing oncoming eastbound traffic, crossed the median back to the westbound side of Palm Bay Road and was finally stopped by a patrol unit at  the traffic light of Palm Bay Road and East Riviera Drive.

Further investigation revealed the driver of the F250 truck may have suffered from a medical condition at the time the crashes took place.

Martinez sad traffic homicide investigators, crime scene technicians and the medical examiner were on scene will review evidence before releasing their findings.

Identities of those involved in the accident have not been released by police.
