BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – Tips from the community helped Brevard County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrest a suspect they say robbed a convenience store in Cocoa early Wednesday morning.

Deputy Maria Fernez of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office said shortly after 1 a.m. Wednesday, a man entered the 7-Eleven convenience store at 1451 Clearlake Road in Cocoa and demanded money while implying he had a weapon.

Fernez said that after the robbery, uniformed deputies from Sheriff’s West Precinct walked the surrounding neighborhoods speaking with the residents to inform them of the violent crime and seeking information.

As a direct result, information was obtained which lead to the identification of the suspect.

Edrick J.B. Plain of Cocoa, 37, was arrested Thursday by deputies and Fernez said he was found wearing some of the same clothing worn during the robbery.

Plain confessed to the crime, which he said was motivated by drug use.

“This is an outstanding example of how effective community partnerships work in fighting crime,” said Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey. “Our deputies initiated a community awareness effort where informed citizens were able to provide the critical information necessary to identify this violent offender. I applaud the incredible team effort to investigate and arrest this subject.”
