Grimes, who served as associate head coach of the BCC men’s basketball team for the 2012-2013 season, succeeds Renee Bellamy who has been reassigned.

He joined BCC’s men’s basketball staff and head coach Jeremy Shulman as an assistant coach for the 2010-2011 season.

Grimes previously served as athletic director and boys basketball head coach at Covenant Christian School in Palm Bay for eight years.

Playing with a varsity team that included eight freshmen, Covenant won only two games in Grimes’ debut season, but the team improved to 12 wins in his second season. That was followed by a 20-win season and a top-10 state ranking in his third campaign there.

A native of Greenville, N.C., Grimes, his wife Haley and daughters Emma, Georgia, Sophie and Charlotte, reside in Palm Bay.

“We are excited to name Jim Grimes as interim women’s basketball coach,” Carr said.  “He has helped Coach Shulman on the men’s side the last three years and was a big part of their success. Coach Grimes will hit the ground running and his knowledge of the game will help us get our women’s program hopefully going in the right direction.

“We have not had a winning program in over five years and look forward to a new start with the program,” Carr said. “We wish Coach Bellamy the very best in her new assignment at BCC. Coach Grimes is the right person for the job right now as he knows what it takes to build a successful program and he is a very strong basketball mind.”

BCC’s women finished 3-27 last season. Bellamy was 42-128 overall at BCC.

Grimes attended and played basketball at Covenant College and Trinity Christian College and graduated from Winthrop University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a major in Management.

“I am very excited to be taking on the role of head coach for the women’s basketball program here at Brevard Community College,” Grimes said. “The last three years working for Coach Shulman with the men’s team, has been a great privilege and although I am sad that I will not be working under him, and with our great group of guys, this is a great opportunity that I am honored to be able to take.

“This is a very special place, and Coach Carr has done a great job developing our athletic program into one of the best in the country,” he said. “To be a part of the bright future here is very humbling. I am excited to get started.”
