Elderly Driver Sustains Minor Injuries

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – An elderly woman was take to the hospital suffering from minor injuries she sustained after her car left the roadway and plunged into a retention pond on Wednesday.

Sgt. Kim Montes of the Florida Highway Patrol said Catherine Walsh of Melbourne, 86,  was driving a 2007 Toyota on Wickham Road near Pine Branch Road in Melbourne about 1:45 p.m.Wednesday when the car suddenly veered off the road onto the shoulder and continued into a retention pond.

Montes said the vehicle was submerged, but rescue personnel were able to extricate Walsh from the vehicle.

Walsh was transported to Viera Hospital suffering from minor injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
