BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – A brush fire near Hield Road NW in Palm Bay that cropped up on Thursday afternoon has been contained, but firefighters remain at the scene to put out fire remnants.

Palm Bay Public Information Officer Yvonne Martinez said the fire was scattered across an area several blocks wide. She said fire crews were concerned because there are nearby homes and other structures in the area that are spread between many vacant lots.

The brush fire did some structural damage to fencing, but there are no other confirmed reports of damage. Residents in the affected area were asked to stay inside their homes and avoid emergency vehicles. Martinez said access to the area was blocked at Minton Road and Hield and will remain blocked while the situation is still active. No injuries have been reported.

Palm Bay Fire Rescue is receiving assistance from Brevard County Fire Rescue, Melbourne Fire Deoartment, the Division of Forestry and  West Melbourne. The fire marshal reports a homeowner burning a trash pile in his backyard is the most likely cause of the fire.
