Officer Barbara Matthews of the Cocoa Police Department said Vernon Augustus Bell of Cocoa, 30, died of gunshots wounds at 800 N. Fiske Boulevard about 9 p.m. Sunday.

Matthews said Bell did not live at the 800 N. Fiske address, but was there for a party.

Police found Bell shot to death after receiving calls about shots fired in the Crestview Villas Apartments area Sunday night.

Moments later, Matthews said police also received a call that subjects were seen breaking into an apartment at 1514 Clearlake Road, which turned out to be Bell’s apartment.

Police have interviewed several witnesses and have been following up on leads since Sunday.

Matthews said this shooting was not related to an earlier homicide Sunday at 1311 Fiske Boulevard that claimed the life of Faye Jones, 81.

The suspect in that crime, Marcus A.  Royal, surrendered to authorities in Richmond, Va. on Tuesday.

Anyone with information about this murder is asked to call Cocoa Police Detective Glen Wade at 321-637-6330, or CRIMELINE at 1-800-423-TIPS (8477). Calls to CRIMELINE may be anonymous.
