FORMER COMMISSIONER HONORED

BREVARD COUNTY • VIERA, FLORDA – Commissioner Andy Anderson will unveil a bust of former County Commissioner Joe Wickham today at 4 p.m. at the Viera Government Complex.

The bust, created by local artist Palmer Collins, pays tribute to one of the most visionary politicians in Brevard’s history. Wickham served on the County Commission from 1952-1964 and 1972-1984, a total of 24 years.

In his time as commissioner, Wickham started the county’s permanent mosquito control program and implemented numerous community infrastructure projects, including building the road that bears his name.

He also laid the groundwork for Wickham Park by convincing developers to donate land to the project and using his own construction company to clear the site.

Members of Wickham’s family and many former county commissioners, including two that served with him, Sue Schmitt and Val Steele, will be on hand to honor Wickham. The bust will remain on display on the first floor of Building C in the Viera Government Complex for four months.
