The clinic offers advanced testing, including Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) studies, Electromyography (EMG), & Electroencephalography (EEG). Electroencephalography records brain wave activity, which can help diagnose disorders such as seizures and epilepsy.

NCV studies can aid in the diagnosis of nerve injuries and neuropathy, which affect the peripheral nervous system. This test investigates the causes of numbness, tingling, pain or loss of sensation.

A technician places electrodes on the skin, over a particular nerve or muscle, and uses electrical stimulation to activate the nerve. EMG records the electrical activity of muscle groups, and is a diagnostic procedure to assess the health of muscles.

Deep Brain Stimulation is a therapeutic treatment in which electrodes that have been surgically placed in one or more areas of the brain are used to control the symptoms associated with movement disorders. It can offer relief to patients experiencing moderate disability from Parkinson’s disease, for example.

A small needle is gently placed within a muscle by the physician, and the muscle’s activity is then transmitted to a computer.

These results can reveal muscle or nerve dysfunction.  This test is often ordered in conjunction with the NCV. The physician evaluates and interprets the data collected by these studies to render a diagnosis.

“Although I loved academic medicine, I realized how much I enjoyed taking care of patients and wanted to move closer to home,” said Dr. Miller.

She was particularly interested in joining the Neurology Clinic due to its patient-focused and friendly atmosphere. Dr. Miller’s favorite quote is from Sir William Osler: “Listen to your patient, he is telling you the diagnosis.”

With so many changes in healthcare and so much pressure to cut costs, patients often aren’t given the time to fully tell their stories. Dr. Packey, Dr. Turck and Dr. Miller draw on their extensive educational and clinical backgrounds, and employ the latest medical advancements, to provide the highest level of quality patient care.
