Foot Pursuit Leads to Gun and Drug Bust in Melbourne

SUSPECT TRIPPED WHILE REACHING FOR GUN
BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Clifford Long, 25, of Melbourne was arrested by Melbourne Police for possession of methamphetamines and a concealed firearm.

According to Melbourne Police Sgt. Sheridan Shelley, officers were conducting a foot patrol at the Shull Manor Apartment Complex at 711 University Blvd. when they smelled burnt marijuana in the area.
As the officers walked through the parking lot to investigate, they observed Clifford Long in the area of the strong odor. Upon seeing the officers, Long ran from them in the opposite direction and a foot pursuit ensued.

According to Sgt. Shelley, officers continuously ordered Long to stop running. During the officer’s pursuit, Long was observed reaching into the waistband of his pants and produced a handgun from underneath his shirt.
Long turned toward the pursuing officers with firearm in hand, but tripped over a curb and fell to the ground.Long dropped the firearm when he fell and he was taken into custody.
CONCEALED FIREARM, METHAMPHETAMINE, COCAINE FOUND ON SUSPECT
Upon being searched, arresting officers located marijuana, a baggie containing cocaine residue and approximately one gram of methamphetamine in Long’s possession. The firearm, a loaded .45 caliber handgun, was also retrieved. Long was booked at the Melbourne Police Department and transported to the Brevard County Jail.
