Medical Missionaries Seek Funds For Mission To Peru

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – A Melbourne-based team of eight medical professionals will conduct a medical mission trip to Lima, Peru Sept. 29 through Oct. 6.

As part of medical mission teams of the Peruvian American Medical Society, Dr. Cesar Jara, a Melbourne interventional cardiologist, brings heart care to remote communities in his native Peru. Every year since 2007, Dr. Jara has participated in at least one of PAMS’ 26 annual missions to Peru.

The team will work in coordination with the Peruvian American Medical Society (PAMS) to provide cardiac surgery and interventional cardiology procedures to needy patients.

The team, self dubbed “Florida HeartWorks,” consists of Respiratory Therapist Mary Lamontagne, Surgical nurse/first assistant Marie Bloch, ICU nurse Patti Carberry, ICU nurse Christina Datta, Surgical perfusionist/ICU nurse Nichole Bernhardt, Anesthesiologist/ intensivist Dr. Mario Camps, Interventional cardiologist/Intensivist Dr. Cesar Jara, and Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. Michael Greene.

Datta, wife of Melbourne orthopedic spine specialist Devin Datta, and Jara each have prior experience with multiple mission trips to Peru. Greene has led medical missions in Haiti.

During this initial visit, the team will assess the needs of the cardiovascular program at Hospital Nactional Dos de Mayo in Lima. They will establish an educational exchange with local Peruvian physicians and medical staff and conduct lectures on their medical specialties.

With PAMS, physicians such as Jara—as well as nurses, dentists and paramedical volunteers— travel to Peru at their own expense, motivated by a passion to help those in desperate need of medical care. (Image for SpaceCoastDaily.com)

“In developing countries like Peru there are very few government programs available to assist the uninsured with heart disease,” said Christina Datta.

“We can donate and provide lifesaving surgical services these Peruvian patients could never afford.”

The team is seeking private donations to support the overall expenses of the mission. PAMS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and all charitable contributions will be provided a letter of receipt for tax deductions.
