Domestic Violence Awareness Seminar Today

EVENT SET FOR TODAY AT 6:30 P.M.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the Brevard County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and the Cocoa Police Department will be hosting a seminar, “Educate, Engage and Empower” today beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The seminar is open to the public and will be held in the conference room of the Cocoa Police Department, 1226 West King Street in Cocoa.

The Melbourne-Palm Bay Alumnae Chapter was chartered on April 30, 1989 by Dr. Louise A. Rice, Southern Regional Director and Yvonne Kennedy, National President.
Charter members were: Patricia W. Black, Ralphalette T. Bartell, Pearl D. Blake, Linda J. Butler, Jacquelyn E. Chambers, Wanda Cooper, Catherine B. Forbes, Viola B. Franklin, Emily B. Frink, Theresa G. Gaines, Beatrice R. Gillespie, Clarissa E. Hall, Patricia Harvey (Deceased) , Edna W. Jackson, Doris F. Jefferson, Leslie B. Lee, Kathy A. Robinson, Erie M. Shackleford, Bridgette W. Smith and Clara P. Smith.
The chapter members are actively implementing the goals of the sorority through a variety of programs; Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta GEMS Institute, Delta Academy, EMBODI, International Awareness & Involvement, American Cancer Society-Relay for Life, American Heart Association-Go Red For Women, Delta Bookmark, Adopt-a-Child, and Delta Days at the State Capital.
The Chapter sponsors local programs that include the Black Heritage Calendar Fest, Clarissa E. Hall Debutante Ball, Family Day Picnic and the Red and White Ball.
Chapter Highlights
- Promote awareness and raised funds for clean drinking water in Haiti
- Powell Subdivision Neighborhood Watch Program Book-A-Thon
- Clarissa E. Hall Annual Debutante Ball for 22 years
- Awarded over $250,000 in academic scholarships
- Donated labor & cash to Habitat for Humanity
- Established the 501c3 Melbourne-Palm Bay Delta Life Development Center, Inc. in 1994
