Metro Papers Dumping Paywalls

As internationally-followed online newspaper sites such as the Wall Street Journal and  the New York Times enjoy success with paywall format to limit access to online articles, metro newspapers have struggled with the paid access model. Do you think regional, metro or local newspapers can succeed with a paywall format, or will readers ultimately find too many free alternatives for article paywalls to emerge as a viable format?
