BREVARD COUNTY COCOA, FLORIDA — Major Michael Cantaloupe has been selected as the Acting Police Chief following Chief Klayman’s retirement.

Below is a statement from Cocoa Police Department. Acting Police Chief-Designate Cantaloupe has served the citizens of Cocoa for just under 23 years in a multitude of roles, including as a Patrol Watch Commander, Community Relations Unit, SWAT, Crisis Negotiation Team, Special Investigations  Unit, and Internal Affairs.  Cantaloupe is well respected in the law enforcement community and in the City of Cocoa.

“Selecting a Police Chief, even an Acting Police Chief, is arguably one of the most important decisions a City Manager must make.  The position has a great deal of responsibility in terms of being the face of our City in responding to and serving the needs of our community.  Public safety is priority number one for a community!  If our residents and business owners do not feel safe and free from the deleterious effects of crime they will look to relocate from our community.  As public servants it is our job to meet or exceed their expectations and ensure they have an enhanced quality of life” stated Cocoa’s City Manager John A. Titkanich, Jr.

During the next six weeks, the Police Chief, Acting Police Chief-Designate and the City Manager will work together to ensure the transition will be a smooth one.  “In terms of the recruitment process going forward, it is my intention to allow our Acting Police Chief adequate time to get fully acclimated with the rigors and demands of being the chief administrator of a law enforcement agency.  After a period of time I will evaluate the timing of the future recruitment process (if necessitated)” said Titkanich.

“A leader’s success depends on the success and support of his and her personnel assigned under their command.  I know the caliber, dedication and professionalism of the Command Staff as well as all the employees of the Cocoa Police Department.  Together, I am certain the Cocoa Police Department will continue to move forward in a positive manner that will meaningfully impact our community” stated Titkanich.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to continue to serve the Citizens of Cocoa in this leadership role,” stated Cantaloupe. “we move forward we will strive to align our goals with the City Council and the citizens of Cocoa.”
