OBITUARY

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Lt. Col (Ret) Walter A. Gallup, 75, passed away Tuesday, December 10, 2013.

Walter was born in North Adams, Mass. in 1938. He graduated from Norwich University in 1959 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lt., Armor that same year. He was an Armed Forces Staff College graduate. He was an assistant Professor of Military Science at Canisius College and served in the Army SROTC in Buffalo, New York.

Walter served in the military and was active duty from 1960 – 1980. He served two twelve month tours in Vietnam as an advisor to Vietnamese army forces. Walter finally retired at PAFB – US Army Readiness Group, Patrick.

Walter received many awards during his time in service, including: Bronze Star Medal with oak leaf cluster, Air Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Bronze Star, Vietnam Staff Service Medal, and the Combat Infantry Badge.

He was a Senior Army Instructor, AJROTC at Cocoa Beach High School from Aug 1980 – Jan 1992. He was awarded Patriot of the month 3 times, CBHS Teach of the Year in 1987 and the Minuteman Award in 1991. He coached the CBHS Rifle Team, winning 11 state championships and coached the CBHS Color Guard, winning 3 state championships.

Walter was the director of Army instruction with Brevard County School District from 1992 – 2000. He attended Holy Apostle Church in Satellite Beach where he was an usher for 10 years. Walter was also an avid fisherman whose largest fish was a 45 lb Channel Bass (Red Fish) caught in the Satellite Beach surf.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Beverly, children, Kristin, Craig & Mark, grandchildren, Erica, Michael, Susan, Jessica & Amanda, brother, Chet, several nieces and nephews and his ever faithful companion – “Charlie Brown”. A service will be held at Holy Apostles Episcopal Church on Monday December 16 at 10:30am with reception to follow the service and inurnment at 2:00pm at Florida Memorial Gardens in Rockledge.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the JROTC scholarship fund – MOAAC Scholarship Fund PO Box 254708 PAFB, FL 32925-4708 or Holy Apostles Memorial Fund – 505 Grant Ave, Satellite Beach FL 32937.
