Dumont, Murphy Earn Panther Student-Athletes of the Week

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — Florida Tech swimmers Brian Dumont and Bernie Murphy were chosen Florida Tech’s Panther Student-Athletes of the Week for the period of Jan. 6-12 on Monday.

Dumont, a sophomore electrical engineering major from Williamsburg, Va., guided the Panthers to their third straight win last Saturday against Savannah College of Art and Design. Murphy, a freshman biology major from nearby Melbourne Beach, was victorious in the 200-yard freestyle at a time of 1:59.21. She also swam to a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle along with Lauren Suarez, Kristen Jones and Liana Soileau.

In the 146-116 decision, Dumont won the 100-yard breaststroke at 59.39 and the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:09.53. He also helped his 200-yard medley relay team of Tyler Phelps, Steven Moodie and Jonah Rieman place second with a mark of 1:37.59. The team’s three straight wins is the program’s longest winning streak in its three-year history.

THE PANTHERS RETURN SATURDAY FOR FINAL HOME CONTEST

Dumont, Murphy and the Panthers will travel to Saint Leo on Friday for a 3 p.m. race against the Lions. The women will also compete against Lynn in the meet.

On Saturday, FIT returns to the Panther Aquatic Center for its last home contest of the 2013-14 season against Rollins at 11 a.m. Live results will be available on Saturday through the Meet Mobile app on select cell phones and tablets.
