Phelps led Panthers to first win over a ranked team

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — Florida Tech freshman Tyler Phelps and junior Kayk Wilson have been named the Student Athletes of the Week for the period of Dec. 30-Jan. 4.

Phelps led the Panthers to a pair of victories, including a 112-93 win over No. 22 Lewis-Florida Tech’s first win over a ranked team in its three-year history. Against Lewis, the Loxley, Ala., native finished first in the 100-yard backstroke event in a time of 54.37 seconds. He was also a part of the second-place 400-yard medley relay team who swam the event in a time of 3:38.18. In a 106-88 win over Mount Union, Phelps took first place in the 200-yard backstroke event in a time of 1:56.95. The freshman then swam on the 200-yard medley relay team, which finished second in a time of 1:40.50. For his performance last week, Phelps was named the Sunshine State Conference Men’s Swimmer of the Week.

WILSON LED PANTHERS TO FIRST SSC WIN OF THE SEASON

Wilson led all scorers in the game with 23 points to go with three rebounds, and three steals.

Wilson battled off an illness Saturday to lead the Panthers women’s basketball team to a 59-40 road victory over Saint Leo in SSC play. Wilson led all scorers in the game with 23 points to go with three rebounds, and three steals. It was the sixth time this season that Wilson has scored at least 20 points in a game, and she has scored in double figures in all 14 contests. Wilson is second in the Sunshine State Conference in scoring at 18.6 points per game.

Phelps and Florida Tech swimming will be back in action Saturday Jan. 11 when they host the Savannah College of Art and Design at 11 a.m. ET. Wilson and women’s basketball get back on the court Wednesday when they host #16 Rollins inside the Clemente Center at 5:30 p.m. ET.
