National Maritime Day is celebrated every year on May 22 which is the date in 1819 when the American Steamship Savannah sailed from Savannah, Georgia on the first transatlantic voyage by a steamship.
The day commemorates the importance of the U.S. Merchant Marine and the maritime industry to our nation’s economy and national security. Events are held throughout the country each year on or near May 22.
