The woman remains in critical condition at a local hospital after being severely beaten, and has been in an induced coma and unable to breath on her own. Her condition has slightly improved now.

West Melbourne Police Detectives have been investigating the case and identified Brooks as a significant person of interest, but lacked physical evidence to charge him with the crime until they received DNA test results from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Crime Lab.

The West Melbourne Police has arrested Auston M. Russell, 18, on charges of Robbery by Sudden Snatching, two counts of Grand Theft on persons 65 or older, and 18 counts of Fraudulent Use of Credit Cards, according to Sgt. Eric Rothery of the West Melbourne Police Department.
Oakley Brooks and the victim reside in the same residence as romantic roommates, therefore his charge of aggravated battery is enhanced with domestic violence provisions. Brooks is being held at the Brevard County Jail on no bond.

According to the West Melbourne Police Department, the forensic report revealed Brooks’ DNA was on the victim’s clothing, which directly conflicts with Brooks’ statement that he was asleep in his bedroom all night on the night of the attack and hadn’t even seen the victim.
