BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY – Palm Bay Mayor William Capote joined family and friends of one of Palm Bay’s oldest residents to help celebrate a centennial milestone.

George Giratis was born on November 19, 1914 and today he celebrated his 100th birthday.

More than a dozen people gathered at the No Better Place Assisted Living Facility in Northwest Palm Bay for the birthday luncheon and to hear bits of wisdom from Palm Bay’s newest centenarian who says his secret to his longevity has been his faith.

“The good Lord will take care of everything,” Giratis said. “I feel good. I’m eating good or doing something right I guess.”

Giratis was born in Hartford Connecticut. He worked as a process engineer for Fenn Manufacturing but dabbled in the stock market with several successful investments he enjoys bragging on.

He moved to Palm Bay last year after spending time in other parts of the state.

His wife passed away in 2004. He has two daughters.

“I kept telling him he would live to be 100,” said his daughter Karen Spear. “He didn’t believe it, but we’re here and he did it!”

Giratis enjoys watching sports, especially his UCON women’s basketball. According to his daughter his mind is still sharp as he continues to try to invent the next great thing.

“It’s a great accomplishment to get to 100,” said Mayor Capote.

“I always enjoy speaking with people older than me because you just can’t get that from books. It’s an honor for me to be here and I wish you a very happy birthday!”
