BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Running Zone will host its ninth annual 3K race at Brevard Zoo February 14.
There will be two races. The first race, Zoom, begins at 7 a.m., and the second race, A little less Zoom, begins at 7:35 a.m. Cost is $30 in advance and $35 the day of the race. Proceeds benefit Brevard Zoo.
Since 2007, Running Zone has donated a total of $49,000 to the Zoo.
This year’s race takes runners on a 1.8 mile course that starts at the front entrance and winds through the Zoo and into behind-the-scenes areas. There will be plenty of animal-viewing opportunities along the way.
“These dollars help enable the Zoo to acquire items needed by the animal department and support important conservation projects,” said Michelle Smurl, Director of Animal and Conservation Programs at Brevard Zoo.
A delicious breakfast will be provided by Pizza Gallery and Grill. And, participants receive 50% off Zoo admission the day off the race. Following the main event will be a free Li’l Zebra Kiddie Run with Zippy the Gecko.
The races at the Zoo are always animal-themed and bring a variety of participants, including children and families.
Over 1,000 runners and walkers are expected, and each participant receives a t-shirt.
The awards ceremony recognizes winners with unique prizes, and all participants are eligible for the random drawing of two, one-day tickets to Disney World and a hotel night stay for two (must be present to win).
Brevard Zoo is opening an expanded boardwalk in Expedition Africa the day of the race, which will improve giraffe visibility for patrons and enable them to see lemurs.
Included in the expansion project is the addition of two Grevy’s zebras to the Zoo’s animal collection, which will be on exhibit with the Zoo’s three White rhinos.
