Panthers moved to 1-0 with a 9-0 victory
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Florida Tech men’s tennis team must have been taking notes yesterday as their female counterparts swept both of their matches and the men’s squad duplicated the feat Sunday afternoon.
The Panthers moved to 1-0 with a 9-0 victory over Centre College (Ky.) at Fee Avenue Park in Melbourne.
Riley Lorenz and Jose Martinez opened the match with a 8-2 victory over Lucas Brooks and Caleb Smith.
Patrick Hernandez and Wade Ball kept the momentum going with an 8-4 win against Woody Rini and Logan Henize and Beau Fieldsend and Aria Canadell finished off, winning 8-3 over Trey Williamson and Nathan Stein.
“The guys did a good job with their movement in doubles and handled the wind very well,” said head coach Bill Macom.
“In singles, they all did a good job of keeping their rallies long and dictating the points.”
In singles, Martinez took down Brooks 6-0, 6-1, while Ricardo Corona dominated Forrest Kamperman 6-0, 6-0.
Canadell was victorious over Henize 6-0, 6-2 and Daniel Armellino won against Smith 6-1, 6-0. Mattias Hartmann won as Stein was forced to retire due to injury, while Fieldsend closed out the match with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Rini.
FIT returns to action on Friday as the Panthers travel to West Palm Beach, Florida to take on the Sailfish of Palm Beach Atlantic.
That match is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m. ET.
