Panthers Have A Good Day Two of UCF Invitational

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Florida Tech’s men’s and women’s track & field teams finished strong in day two of the UCF Invitational on Saturday.

FIT placed sixth in the team results against a field full of Division I competitors. The men’s team ended fourth overall in the meet and the women placed eighth overall.

In the men’s 100 meter dash, junior Umut Oztekin tied for fourth place with a time of 11.15. Oztekin finished behind Division I competitors from Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University, University of Florida and an unattached athlete.

The Panthers relay team of Terence Brookins, Gary Holmes, Oztekin and Kevin Jackman placed second in the men’s 4×100 meter relay competition with a time of 42.22.

FIT completed the race just behind first place finisher FAMU which end with a time of 41.55.

Redshirt freshman Rachel Tobin had another excellent performance in the second day of the meet. Tobin finished fifth overall in the women’s 100 meter dash with a time of 12.18, just behind Division I Florida Atlantic University and Florida.

In the women’s 200 meter dash, she beat out by a group of quality competitors to place second overall with a time of 24.27. Tobin finished just behind host University of Central Florida which had a time of 24.04.

“The effort was there but the times were off a little today,” said head coach Pete Mazzone.

“Our throwers had a good two days with several seasonal and personal bests. We need to put some work in as we only have one meet left before we head to the Peach Belt Conference Championship.”

Florida Tech’s men’s and women’s track & field teams return to action at the Pepsi Florida Relays on April 2-3 in Gainesville, Fla.
