Fire Crews Mopping Up 150-Acre Brush Fire From Yesterday In South Brevard

VIDEO UPDATE, May 22, 2015 – 9 p.m.: Palm Bay Fire Rescue Chief Jim Stables with Brevard County Fire Chief Mark Schollmeyer brief the media on a 150-acre brush fire that began Friday afternoon in the area of I-95 and Babcock Street. Stables reported that the fire was 65 percent contained and crews would be working through the night to deal with any flare-ups. (City of Palm Bay video)

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Brevard County Fire Rescue and Palm Bay Fire crews are out Saturday morning “mopping up” the 150-acre fire from yesterday in South Brevard, and authorities are requesting residents to keep an eye out for hotspots:
“We ask residents to be diligent in reporting any fire or smoke activity outside any fire lines or burned areas. Remember, this fire will smolder within those fire lines for days. If you do not have any business in the area of Grant Rd and Babcock Street, we ask that you avoid the area.”

UPDATE: May 22, 2015 – 6:35 p.m.
The fire now extends over 100-acres and Babcock Street is now closed from Whynot Drive to Grant Road.
Southbound I-95 has been reduced to one lane as crews continue their efforts to put out the fire.
Fire crews from neighboring counties, including Orlando, are either on scene or en route to assist with the efforts to contain the blaze.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Brevard County Fire Rescue is fighting a brush fire adjacent to the southbound lanes of I-95 at mile marker 168 near the Grand Road overpass.
One southbound lane has been closed and caution is urged for vehicles navigating thi stretch of I-95.
