Florida Tech’s Trio Of Freshman To Compete At North Florida East Region Preview

BREVARD COUNTY • VIERA, FLORIDA – After one of the best seasons ever for the track & field program, Florida Tech heads into its final meet of the year.

Three freshmen, Maia Carter, Alex Santiago and Rachel Tobin, will represent the Crimson and Gray at the North Florida East Region Preview on Friday at the campus of the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida.

The trio will compete in hopes of garnering a spot in the NCAA Championships on May 21-23 in Allendale, Michigan.

Looking to better her time in the women’s 100 meter hurdles, Carter will be competing in the event on Friday. She achieved a career-best time of 14.64 seconds at the UCF Twilight on April 30. To provisionally qualify for the Division II Championship, Carter will need to run a 14.30 or better.

Santiago joins her classmate in the women’s 100 meter hurdles competition. She is the current Florida Tech record holder in the event. With a time of 14.01 seconds, which she ran at the UCF Twilight, Santiago is already provisionally qualified. To automatically qualify for the championship, Santiago will need to finish the event in 13.22 seconds.

Riding one of the best seasons for a sprinter in program history, Tobin enters the meet with hopes of sealing her fate for the championships.

Tobin is provisionally qualified in both the 100 meter and 200 meter dash, and holds the FIT record in both events.

Her best performance in the 100 meter, 11.85 seconds, was achieved back on March 12 at the USF Invitational. She broke the 200 meter record when she ran a 23.90 at the Bulls Invitational on March 19.

Tobin will need to run an 11.54 in the 100 meter and a 23.60 in the 200 meter to automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships.

Florida Tech kicks off the meet with Carter and Santiago competing in the women’s 100 meter hurdles at 4:30 p.m. ET.
