Melbourne Police: Hostile Crowd Attacks Officer Attempting To Make Arrest

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA — A Melbourne police officer was attacked by a crowd of bystanders early Monday morning as the officer attempted to arrest a 22-year old man on New Haven Avenue.
According to the Melbourne police, a MPD officer was investigating Phoenix Low in regard to an ordinance violation when Low became aggressive with the officer.
The officer attempted to arrest Low, who resisted and tried to flee.
The officer then attempted to handcuff Low when a crowd surrounded the officer and began to interfere with the officer’s efforts to arrest Low by yelling, striking and pulling at the officer and the prisoner, according to the Melbourne police.
According to police, at that point the officer used “less-lethal force” on the crowd.
As the officer was being interfered with, Low fled but was apprehended a short time later. The Melbourne police said that this is the second time in the past two weeks that a crowd has tried to interfere with an officer during an arrest.
Low was arrested and charged with Battery On a Law Enforcement Officer, Resisting With Violence, Resisting Without Violence and Open Container of Alcohol.
